Driving forces are a set of external and internal variables that influence the course of direction of policies, organizations, and decisions at micro-levels. They can be categorized into STEEP (science, technology, economics, environment, and politics). Many futurists scan constantly for different types of driving forces, which can be megatrends or forces with weak signals, in order to be future ready. Through the study of driving forces one can begin to not only anticipate change that is coming but also innovate ahead of others to grab the best opportunities from that change. In the current COVID pandemic there are many companies that anticipated the pandemic and many that adapted within days of the crisis.
